Florida Insurance Requirements

Self-Insurance

There are specific requirements for an individual or other specified entities to be self-insured. Per Section 324.171, F.S., outlines the financial requirements for the Department to issue a certificate to qualified individuals or other specified entities as a self-insurer. In 2013, the Florida Legislature removed surety bonds as a means of obtaining self-insurance. The change went into effect July 1, 2013.

If an individual qualifies to be self-insured, they are financially responsible, this is NOT an insurance policy.
