Veterans’ Preference

Veterans’ preference is intended as a means of recognizing the sacrifices of individuals who served in the United States Armed Forces by assisting  veterans, their spouses, and their family members in pursuing employment opportunities.  Veterans’ preference is given to eligible persons who apply to open, competitive Career Service vacancies.  Current members may also be eligible for promotional preference in some situations.  Visit the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs website to learn more.

Veteran Initiatives

FHP SkillBridge Internship

The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) SkillBridge program is an opportunity for Service members to gain valuable civilian work experience through specific industry training, apprenticeships, or internships during the last 180 days of service. SkillBridge connects Service members (officers or enlisted) with industry partners in real-world job experiences.  The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), a division of FLHSMV, has partnered with Veterans Florida in the creation of an internship for separating or retiring active-duty service members under the SkillBridge Program.  Separating or retiring service members interested in participating in the SkillBridge program can visit Veterans Florida to learn more.

VA GI Bill Education and Training Benefits

Qualifying veterans and their family members can apply for and use GI Bill benefits for a non-college degree program at an approved school and/or while working at a job that has an approved on-the-job training (OJT) program.  The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) Training Academy for FHP troopers has an approved non-college degree and OJT program.  Qualifying veterans and their family members have the opportunity to build a career with one of the finest state law enforcement agencies in the nation, while also receiving a monthly benefit to cover all or some of the cost for training, depending on the GI Bill program and the official location of the school.

FLHSMV Veterans Employee Resource Group

FLHSMV has established a Veterans Advocate Office as an employee resource group in support of our members who are military veterans or family of military veterans.  Participating members receive information related to veteran benefits, services, training, and other resources from local, state and national levels. We also host multiple events throughout the year and invite guest speakers to provide presentations, forums, and counseling on veteran-related topics.
