In case you missed it

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.– The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) and its division of the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) highlight funding from the Focus on Florida’s Future 2024-2025 budget, which Governor DeSantis signed this week, during a press conference in Tampa.

This budget includes allocations for advancing the motorist services program and modernization efforts while investing in upgraded security, technology, and equipment for driver license credentialing services. This funding will increase productivity and elevate the Department’s ability to serve customers statewide while strengthening patrol resources, enabling FHP to prioritize the safety of Florida communities and those visiting our law-and-order state.

“We are dedicated to advancing our public safety mission by improving services to the motoring public and ensuring safety within our communities. The investments outlined in the Focus on Florida’s Future budget reflect our commitment, as well as that of Governor Ron DeSantis, to improving efficiency, modernizing technology, and providing our law enforcement with the necessary tools to safeguard the well-being of those traveling throughout our state” said Executive Director Dave Kerner. “These strategic allocations will enable us to better serve our customers and enhance the safety of Florida’s roadways.”

Key highlights from the FY 2024-2025 budget include:

  • Invests more than $13 million in funding to modernize legacy motor vehicle titling and registration systems, improve security, and offer additional self-service options to increase customer convenience.

Driver License Credentialing Equipment

  • Provides over $5 million to improve credentialing services by updating systems and equipment used to issue Florida driver’s licenses and identification cards.

FHP Motor Vehicles

  • Commits over $3 million to allow the Florida Highway Patrol to acquire additional patrol vehicles to replace current high-mileage vehicles and those that are no longer serviceable.
  • Provides a $1 million increase to FHP operations for fuel, repairs, and maintenance, which will help ensure the safety and readiness of our Troopers.

FHP Equipment and Resources

  • Allows FHP to purchase over $2 million in equipment and resources such as unmanned aerial vehicles ($375,000), optic gun sights ($1.3 million), and armored vehicles ($350,000), as well as the replacement of automated external defibrillator (AED) pads used to provide lifesaving treatment to persons suffering from cardiac arrest ($350,000).
