Florida Financial Responsibility and Insurance Program

Working Together to Make a Safer Florida

With the help of our insurance industry partners, Department of Financial Services and the Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR), the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is responsible for compliance and enforcement of  chapters 627 and 324, Florida Statutes.

The department is responsible for making sure vehicle owners have the necessary insurance to pay for the damages they cause or may cause. OIR serves Floridians through its responsibilities for regulation, compliance and enforcement of statutes, related to the business of insurance.

Ten-Day Reporting Requirements Effective July 1, 2013

Per Florida law (section 324.0221, Florida Statutes), insurers authorized to issue Florida motor vehicle policies must report:

  • Policy cancellation or nonrenewal to the department within 10 days after the processing date or the effective date of each cancellation or nonrenewal, whichever is later.
  • New policy issuances to the department within 10 days.

Reporting renewal policies is no longer required.

Uninsured Motorist Rate
The uninsured motorist rate measures the total number of non-commercial vehicles registered but not insured in Florida with at least the minimum coverage of PIP/PDL insurance. Please visit our Uninsured Motorist Rate page for more information.
