FHP Announces New Commander of the Bureau of Criminal Investigations & Intelligence

Newly promoted Major Lopez with his family and co-workers.Florida Highway Patrol Director, Col. David Brierton promoted Joe Lopez as the new Commander of the Bureau of Criminal Investigations & Intelligence (BCII), effective July 26, 2013. Major Lopez was selected from an impressive group of candidates who applied for this leadership position within our agency. He is a forward thinking leader who brings a great deal of experience and knowledge to his new position.

Brierton.After serving four years of active duty in the United States Marine Corps, Lopez began his career in Troop E – Miami in November of 1985, after graduating from the 74th Recruit Class. In addition, Lopez worked as a Special Agent with the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco from 1990-1993.

Lopez was promoted to Corporal in May of 2000 and assigned to the Traffic Homicide program in Miami. In June of 2002, Lopez transferred to the Bureau of Investigations unit in Miami. He was promoted to Sergeant on March 14, 2003 and assigned to the Bureau of Investigations in Tallahassee. In June of 2003, he transferred to Miami to supervise the Contraband Interdiction and K-9 Team. On October 14, 2005, he was promoted to Lieutenant and transferred to Orlando, Troop D, where he was assigned as a Shift Commander. In November of 2007, he transferred to supervise the Bureau of Investigations unit in Orlando and on May 21, 2010, was promoted to Captain as the District Commander for Orlando, Troop K – Turnpike.

Lopez graduated from the 59th session of the Command Officer Development Course, Southern Police Institute (SPI), University of Louisville, the IACP Leadership in Police Organizations (LPO) program. He also received Drug Enforcement Administration training. He is a graduate of the Metro Dade Police Special Response Team School and the Miami SWAT School.
