Pursuit Leads to Drug Arrest
On Jan. 29, 2012, Sgt. Christopher Fletcher observed a green vehicle traveling on the Sawgrass Expressway in Broward County, and both occupants were not wearing safety belts. Fletcher conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, and as he approached, he could smell an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Before Fletcher could speak to the driver, the vehicle sped away. Fletcher returned to his vehicle and pursued the suspect.
Fletcher continued to pursue the vehicle as it exited the expressway onto University Drive. The vehicle made several U-turns, traveled back onto the expressway, continued to drive in a reckless manner and exited onto Commercial Boulevard. The vehicle finally came to a stop, and both subjects were taken into custody.
A search of the vehicle revealed cut marijuana plants that weighed 16 pounds.
The subjects were charged with felony possession of marijuana and possession with intent to deliver. The driver was charged with reckless driving and fleeing or attempting to elude and other traffic charges.
