Trooper Michael Vanleer Receives 2011 Executive Director’s Award

Exec. Director Julie Jones and Trooper Michael VanleerAt a ceremony held at the Neil Kirkman building in Tallahassee, Fla., Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Executive Director, Julie Jones, presented the Executive Director’s Award to Trooper Michael Vanleer for his achievements in police canine training. Vanleer, a career member of the Florida Highway Patrol’s canine program, is a certified instructor and has trained 195 dogs for the Patrol. Additionally, he developed the canine training facility with minimal resources. Vanleer was instrumental in developing partnerships with other agencies. He also established the Department’s relationship with Florida International Forensic Research Institute and through that partnership has made the Patrol a nationally recognized leader in the police community for detector canines. Vanleer is the only member of the agency’s history to be trained in explosive detection. Because of this distinction, he is also the only member to handle two canines daily, one for explosive detection and one for narcotics detection.
