Fallen Trooper Honored in Citrus County
On July 19, 2011, more than 37 years after he was killed in the line of duty, Trooper Ronald Gordon Smith was memorialized when a bridge was named in his honor. Members of the Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conversation Commission and the National Association of Retired Law Enforcement Officers hosted a formal ceremony to dedicate a new, twin span bridge across the Florida Barge Canal. Smith was shot and killed near the south end of the bridge as he approached two escaped convicts on the run from Oklahoma on Dec. 23, 1973. Smith’s daughter and grandchildren attended the ceremony along with the first law enforcement officer to arrive on the scene, retired Hernando County Deputy Jeff Duval.
