Auxiliary Unit Apprehends Hit and Run Driver
After a long day of training in Belle Glade, Fla., the Florida Highway Patrol Troop L Auxiliary unit was traveling home on State Road 80. As they traveled through Wellington, they came upon a vehicle crash involving three vehicles blocking the roadway with several injured occupants.
The troopers stopped at the crash scene, immediately began first aid to the injured and notified fire and rescue. While on scene, the troopers received word that the driver of the vehicle who caused the crash fled the scene on foot with two other occupants from that vehicle. After obtaining a brief description of the fleeing suspects, the troopers searched of the area. Within a few minutes, Auxiliary Lt. Mickey King located the driver who was hiding in a nearby wooded area. A short time later, the troopers found the two passengers and secured all three until crash investigators arrived on scene.
Thanks to the quick actions of Auxiliary Troopers Robert Hager, Robert Mutz, Paul Scott and Tom Steinkamp; Sgt. Larry Steinberg; Lt. Mickey King and Capt. Craig Norsworthy, a dangerous hit and run driver was taken into custody without further injuries. The women and men of the Florida Highway Patrol Auxiliary dedicate a tremendous amount of time, support and in this case, courage to take action.
