FHP Participates in Teen Driving Event
On November 18 and 19 the Ford Motor Company Fund, the Governors Highway Safety Association, and South Florida Ford Dealers hosted the Ford Driving Skills for Life event at Miami Homestead Speedway. The event is designed for teens between the ages of 15 and 19 who are newly licensed drivers or hold a valid learner’s permit.
Students received training from some of the top professional driving instructors in the nation. All of the instructors have a background in auto and motorcycle racing. The students participated in three different driving scenarios which included a vehicle handling exercise, a hazard recognition exercise, and a speed and space management exercise which dealt with driver distractions and how the smallest distraction can have serious effects on driving.
The final event took place in the Florida Highway Patrol’s area and included the Rollover Simulator, Seat Belt Convincer, Fatal Vision goggles, the 1940 Ford and Division of Driver License personnel. Lieutenant James Durden, Lieutenant Alex Annunziato and Sergeant Mark Wysocky spoke to the students about the importance of wearing seat belts, distracted driving issues, the graduated driver license system, and the effects of alcohol.
