FHP Helps Crackdown on Tampa Area Gang Members
TAMPA, Fla. – On Feb. 19, 2009, Florida Highway Patrol Troop C Contraband Interdiction Program members participated in Operation Boomerang. The operation led to 75 arrests and 125 warrants for Tampa area gang members who face drug charges, not appearing in court on attempted murder charges, driving without a valid license and racketeering. Future arrests are expected.
The operation is the result of a seven-month investigation and is a joint effort among the Tampa Police Department, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Highway Patrol. In addition to the arrests, Operation Boomerang led to the seizure of two kilograms of cocaine, 582 grams of crystal methamphetamine, 156 pounds of marijuana, eight firearms and a total of $60,000 in cash and vehicles. The operation targeted 17 gangs, including Latin Kings, Sur 13, Draks and Bloods.
Forty-five investigators participated in making the arrests.
