Troopers Initiate Hands Across the River


Troops A and H group photoTroops A and H Troop Commanders shake hands.Troops A and H recently teamed up to conduct a joint comprehensive roadside sobriety checkpoint they called Hands Across the River. The enforcement detail was set up on State Road 20 at the Apalachicola River Bridge on the Liberty/Calhoun County line. Troop A conducted their checkpoint on the Westside of the river while Troop H conducted theirs on the east side. Approximately fifty members worked the detail, including troopers, auxiliary, staff from the training academy, and officers from Department of Transportation Motor Carrier Compliance.

FHPA members GrillingPrior to the checkpoint, Troop H FHPA members cooked a meal for everyone. Troop A’s Chaplin Rudie Guta donated the food for the cookout. Everyone greatly appreciated the food and fellowship prior to the enforcement operation.

The combined efforts of both troops resulted in the following citations:

  • 3 DUI arrests
  • 3 Narcotics arrests
  • 3 arrests for Driving while License Suspended
  • 33 other citations or arrests
  • 43 Warnings
  • 82 Faulty Equipment Notices

Members enjoy cookout Members relax with FHPA provided meal before getting to the task at hand.A total of 885 vehicles were checked during the course of the single day detail. Through education and enforcement, the Florida Highway Patrol hopes to deter impaired driving and reduce the number of crashes, injuries, and deaths on our roadways. All of those involved in the checkpoint did an outstanding job. Thank you!
