FHP Honors Unsung Heroes
Each year the second full week of April is dedicated to public safety telecommunicators. This year the week of April 13th through April 19th is National Telecommunications Week (NTW). All of the Florida Regional Communication Centers have various events planned throughout the week to honor and celebrate these hard working dedicated women and men. The Florida Highway Patrol’s valuable Duty Officers well deserve our thanks not only during this week, but throughout the entire year!
The term “9-1-1” is often associated with rapid emergency response, poise under pressure, aid and compassion in times of distress and critical decision-making within seconds. Many of us don’t stop to think about the seemingly nameless, faceless individuals who answer emergency calls until they experience actual emergencies themselves. Many times these “unsung heroes” are overlooked or taken for granted. FHP’s Duty Officers and Duty Officer Supervisors do a tremendous job for the public, serving as the lifeline between our troopers and other state law enforcement officers working the road and the motoring public. Their top priority is the safety of Florida’s citizens. Duty Officers are known as the “voice without a face.” And what an important voice it is when a trooper or citizen is in need. Duty Officers are usually the first to receive the call for help, and the first to answer by offering valuable assistance. Telecommunicators make the difference between life and death in many instances.

By officially recognizing Florida Highway Patrol Duty Officers we hope to awaken public awareness to the vital link that is the Duty Officer. It takes a special person with unique skills to do their job. We appreciate and thank each of our duty officers for the manner in which they serve the Florida Highway Patrol, our citizens and the visitors of our state.
