Trooper Uses Camera Phone in Homicide Investigation

Sergeant DrakeSergeant Janice Drake was recently recognized by Pinellas County Commissioner John Moroni for her dedication and investigative skills stemming from a homicide investigation.

In the early morning hours of February 25, 2006, Sgt. Drake began to investigate a fatal crash that appeared to be a single vehicle crash that claimed the life of a passenger and seriously injured the driver. Following leads discovered on the scene, Sgt. Drake seized a camera phone she found in the vehicle, and used it to track the suspect’s actions leading up to the crash.

Evident on the victim’s cell phone were photos depicting underage drinking in a number of local establishments. Using this information, Sgt. Drake was able to compile evidence in this case that was instrumental in the arrest of a Tampa Bay area teenager for DUI manslaughter.
