Train Safety Awareness Week
Troop G participated in Train Safety Awareness Week April 16-22, 2006, along with state Community Traffic Safety Teams and Florida’s Operation Lifesaver. This awareness event aims to increase motorist and pedestrian awareness of highway-rail grade crossing safety.
In Florida during the past five years, there have been 509 highway/railroad grade crossing collisions, which resulted in 254 personal injuries and 81 fatalities. During this same period, 147 pedestrians were killed and another 99 injured while trespassing on railroad property rights-of-way. Florida now ranks third in the nation in trespass fatalities.
Every single one of these incidences could have been prevented if safety precautions would have been observed.
