Foot Chase Leads to Drug Bust at Motel
Recently, while Corporal Bruce Simmons (right) was on patrol on I-75 in Columbia County, he clocked a speeder at 100 mph traveling northbound on the interstate. Corporal Simmons was attempting to overtake the suspect when the suspect quickly exited onto US 90 in Lake City.
Trooper John Stuart (left), who was patrolling the area, observed the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. Trooper Stuart then observed the vehicle turn into the parking lot of a local restaurant, jump the curb, and come to a sudden stop in front of a motel.
The driver jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot. Corporal Simmons arrived on the scene and he and Trooper Stuart chased the suspect on foot behind the motel. Lake City Police officers and Columbia County deputies assisted in setting up a perimeter. Trooper Keith Slanker and K-9 Grim were called in for additional assistance.
After a ten-minute search, the suspect was apprehended without incident. Corporal Simmons recovered a box of checks in another person’s name the defendant had been carrying on him while running. The suspect had been staying with a man and a woman in a room at the motel.
Pictured left, Trooper Keith Slanker and K-9 Grim are called to the scene.
Contact was made with the other occupants of the room, and an ID check was made on each. The woman in the room had an outstanding warrant for her arrest. She was taken into custody.
K-9 Grim was brought to the room where he quickly alerted, prompting Trooper Slanker to secure a search warrant for the motel room. Troopers Slanker and Caulk searched the room, finding 13.9 grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The male suspect was arrested and taken into custody. Captain Tim Culhane and Sergeant Trampas Bishop also assisted on the scene.
