The $71 million St. George Island bridge in Franklin County was officially opened and dedicated on Friday, February 27, 2004. Lt. Governor Toni Jennings was the keynote speaker for the event. The new bridge, which took over 3 years to construct, is 4.1 miles long, making it the third longest bridge in Florida.

After the official ribbon cutting ceremony, Lt. Governor Jennings, Senator Al Lawson of Tallahassee, and Department of Transportation Secretary Jose Abreau rode in the first vehicle over the new bridge, the Florida Highway Patrol’s 1940 Ford, with Colonel Chris Knight.

The Florida Highway Patrol was pleased to be a part of this historic event.
