Sergeant RoySergeant Kevin D. Roy
(July 19, 1959 – November 30, 2004)

The men and women of the Florida Highway Patrol are saddened at the passing of one of their own. Sergeant Kevin D. Roy passed away after a brave battle, succumbing to cancer on November 30, 2004. Funeral services were held yesterday, December 9th, in Del Ray Beach.

Sgt. Roy started his career in public service by joining the United States Air Force, where he served our country for four years. Following his tour of duty, he joined the Florida Highway Patrol, starting at the Academy in November of 1982. He graduated on February 4, 1983, as a member of the 67th recruit class. Trooper Kevin Roy’s first duty station was on the turnpike in Troop K in West Palm Beach where he was assigned road patrol until his promotion to Corporal in 1999. Upon his promotion, Corporal Roy was assigned to the Davie district as a Traffic Homicide Investigator until he was promoted again to Sergeant in 2003. Sergeant Roy remained in the Davie district, serving a total of 22 years on the Patrol.

He was gregarious at times, but could also be described as a quiet and serious person who loved his job and understood the importance of his family and friends. He also enjoyed spending time away from the rigors of work riding his mountain bike around his neighborhood and along the many trails in parks near his home.

Despite his illness, Roy continued to come to work after his first surgery, quietly carrying out his duties and watching out for the welfare of his fellow troopers and squad members. After his second surgery, he was no longer able to work, yet he continued to keep in touch, and wanted his fellow troopers by his bedside. In the end, Sgt. Roy showed tremendous courage and never gave up or allowed his affliction to burden others. He lost his life to a terrible disease.

Sgt. Kevin Roy will be remembered for his duty to his country, for his dedication to public service, and for his brave fight in the face of adversity.
