Trooper GoodwinTrooper Alton J. (A. J.) Goodwin, a 23-year veteran of the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), was given the James H. Fulford Memorial Instructor Award by the Florida Highway Patrol Auxiliary (FHPA) at their annual training meeting in Orlando Saturday night. Trooper Goodwin has been the training coordinator for Troop F, headquartered in Bradenton for several years, and is responsible for recurrent and mandatory training for FHP Troopers and FHPA Troopers throughout the year.

Trooper Goodwin with family and co-workersThe Fulford Award is presented each year in memory of Trooper James H. Fulford who served as the Unit Instructor of the Jefferson County FHPA Unit, Troop H, in an exemplary manner. Trooper Fulford was killed in the line of duty on February 1, 1992. The award is presented to an FHP Trooper or officer who has distinguished themselves as determined by the members of the FHPA by providing outstanding instruction to the membership. The Auxiliary Commander and the FHP Coordinator look for the nominee’s exhibition of dedication, enthusiasm, and support to the troop or unit.

In the case of Trooper A. J. Goodwin, all of those traits have been very evident and are seen every day by the Troopers of both the FHP and the Auxiliary.
