FHP Helps Establish K-9 Detector Certification

K-9 Basa and Trooper Colalillo.FHP has been very instrumental in assisting the International Forensic Research Institute (IFRI) and the National Forensic Science Technology Center (NFSTC) in establishing the first ever state-wide narcotics K-9 trainer and detection team certification program. The goal of the new certification program is to create a nationally recognized and scientifically sound narcotics certification standard for K-9 teams, which will improve narcotics interdiction for law enforcement across the state.

Thirty-five narcotics detection teams, including all of FHP’s teams, have been certified through this important program. Working with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), and other law enforcement agencies, FHP plans to help expand the program to include all narcotics detection teams in Florida over the next several years. With the expanded certification program, K-9 teams all across the state will have a standard by which to measure drug interdiction enforcement successes. This, in turn, will help increase drug detections and seizures and decrease incidents of drug trafficking in Florida.
