FHP Participates in Manatee County’s Street Smart

FHP Lt. Recently, Gold Coast Eagle Distributing (Anheuser-Busch) presented Street Smart to hundreds of teens at Lakewood Ranch, Palmetto, and Bayshore High Schools in Manatee County. Street Smart, a program offered free of charge to schools and community organizations in classrooms across the United States, is presented by a team of certified paramedics who show students what happens at a trauma scene using the medical equipment they employ in their daily job of trying to save lives. From taking a pulse to transporting trauma victims onto a stretcher to simulating insertion of an IV, students can see first-hand what it’s like to try to save a human life in an emergency situation.

Paramedics reenact a trauma scene for the students.Students learn what it is like to be the victim of a crash. Through the Street Smart presentations, they learn the real life stories behind the traffic crashes and the choices that victims made that caused the crashes. They see reenactments of what happens when irresponsible actions are played out, and the wrong choices are made.

The main purpose of Street Smart is to get teens to understand the power of making good choices, from choosing not to engage in underage drinking and driving, to choosing to wear a safety belt behind the wheel. Hopefully, they will come to understand the risks of making wrong choices, and know the dangerous consequences that can occur as a direct result of making those wrong choices.
