FHP Auxiliary Helps Duty Officer
The Florida Highway Patrol Auxiliary, Troop L, Lantana District, was pleased to donate $1000 to assist Lake Worth Communications Center Duty Officer Ilia Lopez with obtaining a replacement prosthesis. Duty Officer Lopez is shown in the photo above receiving the check from FHP Auxiliary Major Pat Bradley, III, while Sgt. Pat Bradley, Jr. and Division of Driver Licenses Hearing Officer Elaina Ortolivo look on.
Duty Officer Lopez lost her right leg to cancer at three years of age. She had obtained a prosthesis several years ago that had become worn and outdated, which caused additional injuries to her knee. She had been unable to pay $3000 not covered by her insurance to obtain a replacement prosthesis.
During January, DDL Hearing Officer Ortolivo, who is also Chairperson for the Florida State Employees Charitable Campaign for Palm Beach County, was contacted for assistance. Ortolivo subsequently contacted the Coalition for Independent Living, who in turn contacted NBC Channel 5 Reporter Jamie Holmes. Holmes did a story on Duty Officer Lopez requesting donations to assist in paying for a new prosthesis. FHP Auxiliary members in Lantana saw the story on television and later made the donation to assist Lopez.
Because people took the time to care, Duty Officer Lopez has received her new prosthesis.
