Fair Display Depicts DUI Dangers
This year, Leon County was identified by the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) State Safety Office as one of fifteen counties across the state that contributes to 71.8% of Florida’s alcohol-related crashes.
The State’s new anti-DUI campaign entitled, You Drink and Drive. You Lose. is intended to heighten awareness of Florida’s serious DUI problem, educate teens and young drivers (who comprise the majority of DUI violators) about the dangers of impaired driving, and increase enforcement of Florida’s tough DUI laws so more violators will be arrested and removed from the roadways.
It is hoped that this intensive campaign will reduce the number of impaired drivers on Florida’s roads, thereby reducing the number of deaths and injuries caused by alcohol-related crashes in our state in 2004.
Recently, Troop H in Leon County won second place for their entry at the North Florida Fair in the Public Service Showcase category. The booth depicted a DUI suspect being arrested and placed in a patrol car after hitting and killing a pedestrian.
The booth was designed by Nancy McArthur, Public Affairs Specialist, with assistance from other Troop H staff: Lt. Jimmie Collins, Jerry Causseaux, Ouida Wright, and FHPA Trooper Howard Hobby. The DUI display was designed to raise the public’s awareness of the dangers of DUI in the Leon County area and in other counties all across the state of Florida.
