Camaro Featured at Daytona 500
Colonel Chris Knight selected Lieutenant Art Brown (shown in the photos), a 34-year veteran of the FHP, to drive the Camaro on behalf of the women and men of the FHP.
Lieutenant Brown has supervised every race detail in Daytona since 1975. He will be truly missed when he retires from the Florida Highway Patrol on June 30, 2003.
Lt. Brown drove the Patrol’s 35th Anniversary Edition 2002 Chevrolet Camaro. 200 of these high performance patrol cars were purchased last year and strategically located throughout Florida to deter and apprehend aggressive drivers.
The Camaro’s 5.7 liter, 310 horsepower engine, has a top speed of 159 miles per hour and can accelerate to 100 miles per hour from a stopped position in less than 14 seconds.
NASCAR also invited the Patrol to display the Camaro at Daytona USA for the entire week leading up to the Daytona 500. This year marked the first time a Florida Highway Patrol car has ever been featured at Daytona.
