Orange County Troopers Receive Award
On May 27, 2002, while assisting with traffic control at a traffic crash on Vineland Road and Turkey Lake Road in Orange County, Troopers David Gall and James Whitman were flagged down by a woman who indicated that she and her two children had been threatened by a man with a firearm. She provided a description of the man and pointed out the assailant’s vehicle as it proceeded north on Turkey Lake Road.

Troopers Gall and Whitman stopped the van and found a small black revolver-type cap gun in the driver’s possession. The driver was identified as Dennis Garrett of Orlando. It was learned that Mr. Garrett attempted a lane change in front of the woman and she blew her horn to warn him. Garrett apparently become agitated and waived the cap pistol at the woman and her two small children. He pulled the trigger several times, and the woman saw smoke coming from the barrel and became even more frightened.
Garrett was arrested for Aggravated Assault with a Firearm and booked into the Orange County Jail. He was highly agitated and made several threats against the woman while he was being handcuffed.
Troopers Gall and Whitman received the Kiwanis Club’s “Outstanding Officer Award” for apprehending this road rage assailant in Orange County.
