Austin named Deputy Director of Field Operations
Colonel Chris Knight today promoted Region 1 Bureau Chief Larry Austin to Lieutenant Colonel, Deputy Director of Field Operations. Lt. Colonel Austin is a 23-year veteran of the Florida Highway Patrol. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida A & M University. After graduating from FAMU in 1974, he taught high school for three years in the Virgin Islands before joining the FHP on January 9, 1978.
After graduating from the Florida Highway Patrol Training Academy, Austin was assigned to Troop C-Tampa for over 6 years, where he served as both a Trooper and a traffic homicide investigator. In late 1984 he was promoted to Sergeant and transferred to Miami, where he spent the next 6 years of his career. During his stay in Miami, he was also promoted to Lieutenant.
In October 1990, he transferred to Tallahassee as a training officer at the FHP Academy. In February of 1992, Austin was promoted to Captain and transferred to Troop L, Lantana. Nine months later, he was promoted to Major and assigned to the Training Academy as the Patrol’s Chief Training Officer. Lt. Colonel Austin has served as a Bureau Chief of Field Operations since October 1993.
Austin is a member of the Florida Police Chiefs Association, the Florida Sheriffs Association, and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives. He is also a 1989 graduate of the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles’ Management Fellows Program, a 1996 graduate of the Florida Criminal Justice Executive Institute’s Chief Executive Seminar, and a 2001 graduate of the 205th Session of the FBI National Academy.

Lt. Colonel Austin’s wife, Allean, is a supervisor in the Customer Services Section of the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Their daughter, Tifini, is a freshman at Florida A&M University and a member of the Rattler’s “Marching 100”.
