Identity theft has become the fastest growing crime in the United States. Identity theft is a crime in which an imposter uses personal information ( Social Security number, birth date or drivers license) to secure credit cards, loans and merchandise. This type of theft can affect your ability to get credit and cause arrest warrants to be listed under your name. The following are suggestions to lessen the risk:
- Destroy papers you don't need such as credit-card and ATM receipts, checks or deposit
slips, health insurance benefit statements, any check stubs, tax records. Buy a shredder and use
it. Thieves go through your trash.
- Guard your social Security number. Never give it out unless it is absolutely necessary.
- Check your credit report once a year. Investigate any accounts you didn't apply for directly.
- Block your name from marketing lists and remove it from pre-approved offers of credit.
- Guard your personal information. Don't carry anything you don't need, including extra
credit cards, Social Security cards or birth certificates. Cancel credit cards you no longer
use.
- Keep confidential information in a locked area.
- Use caution when buying merchandise on the internet or over the phone, especially if you
did not initiate the call. Beware of scam artists who say you've won a valuable prize or qualify
for a credit card but ask you to verify your Social Security number first. Never give your
Social Security number or personal information over the phone.
