Seat Belt Convincer

The Florida Highway Patrol Seat Belt Convincer is a machine designed to simulate the sensation an individual would experience in a traffic crash at approximately eight miles per hour. This is accomplished by strapping passengers into a cart with a seat belt and shoulder harness and propelling them down a ramp to an abrupt stop. The machine is transported as a trailer would be.

Members of the FHP Public Affairs Section use the Seat Belt Convincer in public demonstrations throughout the state. It is intended to encourage the use of seat belts by allowing individuals to experience a simulated traffic crash with a properly worn seat belt. This provides participants with a better understanding of the potential dangers associated with driving without seat belts.

The Florida Highway Patrol currently uses four Seat Belt Convincers throughout the state.
