The following is a synopsis of the fatality experience during the Thanksgiving Day Holiday period which began at 12:01 a.m., Wednesday, November 24, 2004, and ended at midnight, Sunday, November 28, 2004.

During this time period, there were 55 people killed in 48 fatal traffic crashes.

9 (16%) of the people killed were under 21 years of age;
31 (56%) of the people killed were drivers;
12 (22%) of the people killed were passengers;
8 (15%) of the people killed were pedestrians;
4 (7%) of the people killed were bicyclists;
20 (56%) of the 36 drivers and passengers killed in vehicles normally equipped with safety belts were not using their belts;
24 (44%) of the traffic deaths were alcohol-related;
22 (46%) of the fatal traffic crashes were alcohol-related;
29 (60%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred after dark;
35 (73%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred during clear weather;
39 (81%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred on straight and level highways; and
26 (54%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred on state roads.
