For Release July 5, 2006:

PRELIMINARY FATALITY REPORT FOR THE
2006 JULY FOURTH HOLIDAY PERIOD

Thirty-one people were killed in crashes investigated by Florida Highway Patrol troopers over the five-day July 4th holiday driving period, which began June 30 and ended July 4, 2006.

During this period, troopers charged 198 people with driving under the influence; issued 8,424 speeding citations; issued 1,457 seatbelt and child restraint citations; and assisted 4,109 motorists on Florida’s highways.

The Florida Highway Patrol again participated in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort), a national program aimed at reducing the number of traffic crashes on interstate highways during holiday weekends. During the official holiday driving period (Friday, June 30, through Tuesday July 4, 2006), the Florida Highway Patrol investigated 1,248 collisions. Of those, 115 were classified as alcohol-related.

The statistical information provided below represents preliminary figures and covers only those crashes investigated by Florida Highway Patrol troopers.

  • The 31 deaths occurred in 30 separate traffic crashes.
  • 23 fatalities (or 75 %) occurred during the hours of darkness.
  • 11 of the fatal traffic crashes (or 37 %) were known to be alcohol-related; 15 (or 50 %) remain listed as unknown; with 4 (or 13 %) presently classified as not alcohol related.
  • Of the 31 deaths, 5 (or 16 %) were pedestrians.
  • 52 % of those killed in vehicles normally equipped with safety belts were not wearing their belts.
