FHP Beefs Up Patrols
JACKSONVILLE, FL -- The Florida Highway Patrol is beefing up its patrols on the Fourth of July.
The reason is the same each year. People die on Florida roadways. And each year, troopers hope Florida drivers prove them wrong.
Forty-eight people died on Florida roadways last year over the holiday weekend.
More than half were alcohol-related and more than half of the victims weren't wearing seatbelts.
The FHP says getting people to buckle up is the single most effective thing they can do to save lives.
FHP expects to be busiest right after the fireworks.
"A lot of people are off today and of course a lot of people are going to visit relatives or friends and having cookouts, so hopefully those activities don't involve a lot of alcohol," said Lt. Bill Leeper of the Florida Highway Patrol.
Lt. Leeper says troopers would like your help Wednesday night.
If you see someone you think is driving impaired, dial *FHP from any cellular phone.
You can also dial 511 for updates on holiday traffic conditions.
