FHP Takes To The Road In Major Crackdown
"Operation Safe Ride"
Florida Highway Patrol calls it “Operation Safe Ride”.
The department intends to empty out its offices on Wednesday, put every available officer in Miami Dade County on the road. The objective: to target any driver that is speeding, or driving aggressively, according to Lt. Pat Santangelo, FHP spokesman.
In fact, the whole event is so hush-hush that FHP will only give details to the media once the crackdown is underway as they’re targeting only one expressway in the county.
Lt. Santangelo says that FHP will use aircraft, radar, vascar, video cameras and unmarked vehicles for several hours. Any driver caught putting the public at risk will be stopped, ticketed and in some cases arrested.
So far this year, 79 people have died in traffic crashes in Miami-Dade and Broward, and more than half of those killed were not wearing seatbelts.
This blitz is the start of a two-day statewide traffic enforcement operation.
