Motorists warned to be alert this Halloween

The Florida Highway Patrol has sent a reminder to parents and motorists for Halloween: Be safe.

"Because kids tend to focus on the excitement of Halloween and forget about safety, it's up to us parents, care givers and motorists," FHP Sgt. Jorge Delahoz said in a written statement.

FHP warns motorists to stay alert since neighborhoods that don't normally have foot traffic probably will, especially with children who may dart out into traffic.

"Remember, kids will be excited and may forget to stop, look and listen before they cross the street," Delahoz said.

To parents and caregivers, FHP suggests they make costumes for kids that are light and clearly visible to motorists. Reflective red tape could be a decoration on candy bags, FHP said. Masks should not impair a child's vision or hearing, costumes should be short enough so a child can walk freely, and well-fitting shoes should be worn.
