FHP Prepares For Busy Weekend
PANAMA CITY - If you're like most people you're probably gearing up to hit the road this holiday weekend, but don't worry you won't be alone.
Millions will be headed to their 4thof July destination, but just as you are preparing for busy travel so are Law Enforcement Officials
"We have additional troopers working in the field we have a whole additional squad out tonight to help beef up the patrol," Trooper Tammy Tindle said.
She says there are normally 6 troopers on patrol, but they have more than doubled their staff to protect the roadways.
"It's been very busy today. Our shift started at 2 o'clock, we've had numerous accidents."
She responded to more than 6 accidents early Friday night, which is pretty typical for this holiday weekend.
"Just carelessness, people not paying attention, traffic is bumper to bumper speed obviously driving to fast."
The Florida Highway Patrol says 31 people were killed in traffic crashes in the state of Florida during last years 4th of July holiday.
55% of those drivers and passengers were *not* wearing their seat belts.
42% of these fatal crashes were alcohol related.
As traffic floods into Bay County Trooper Tindle says you need to take certain precautions while on the road.
"We need to just slow down take our time please don't drink and drive and please wear your seatbelts and buckle your children up."
AAA and Budweiser are teaming up to give free rides to drivers who may have had too much to drink.
Call 1-888-AAA-help.
AAA will then send a tow truck out, free of charge, and bring you and your vehicle home.
The service is available for both AAA members and non-members.
