Florida Highway Patrol Looks For Female Troopers
Job Fairs Being Held Across Florida
MIAMI -- The Florida Highway Patrol is looking for a few good women.
Actually, they're looking for a lot of women to become troopers. The agency recently launched an aggressive campaign aimed at encouraging women to join their ranks.
Only about 12 percent of the Florida Highway Patrol's troopers are women.
The agency held a job fair in Orlando in May designed specifically to attract women. About 41 women showed up.
"We do a lot of military recruitment for those who may be getting out of the military," said Lt. Bill Leeper, of the FHP. "We go to a lot of schools, local community colleges and universities to get the word out that opportunities are here."
Experts say law enforcement agencies across the country are seeing lower numbers in their female ranks.
"We definitely need to see more woman on the patrol and definitely let them see that this a great opportunity for them. It's a great job. It's a great career," said FHP Sgt. Maritza Gonzales.
