The following is a synopsis of the fatality experience during the Labor Day Holiday period which began at 12:01 a.m., Friday, September 3, 2004, and ended at midnight, Monday, September 6, 2004.

During this time period, there were 23 people killed in 22 fatal traffic crashes.

4 (17%) of the people killed were under 21 years of age;
12 (52%) of the people killed were drivers;
6 (26%) of the people killed were passengers;
4 (17%) of the people killed were pedestrians;
1 (4%) of the people killed was a bicyclist;
10 (59%) of the 17 drivers and passengers killed in vehicles normally equipped with safety belts were not using their belts;
7 (30%) of the traffic deaths were alcohol-related;
7 (32%) of the fatal traffic crashes were alcohol-related;
8 (36%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred after dark;
7 (32%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred during clear weather;
15 (68%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred on straight and level highways; and
12 (55%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred on state roads.
