TALLAHASSEE - Preliminary reports indicate that only 16 persons died in traffic crashes during the 96-hour Memorial Day holiday weekend, which began on Friday, May 23rd, and ended at midnight, Monday. Last year, 24 persons were killed during the same period, based on preliminary reports. After all reports were received last year, the number of deaths increased to 30. The following is a synopsis of the fatality experience which occurred over the weekend:

  • The preliminary traffic fatality count stands at 16, which equates to one death every 6 hours.

  • 9 fatalities (or 56%) occurred during the hours of darkness.

  • 2 of the fatal traffic crashes (or 15%) were known to be alcohol-related, 8 (or 62%) remain listed as unknown, with 3 (or 23%) presently classified as nor being alcohol-related.

  • Of the 16 deaths, 4 (or 25%) were pedestrians.

  • 1 (or 8%) of the 13 fatal crashes occurred during inclement weather.

  • Out of the 12 fatalities having safety belts available, only 4 (or 33%) were known to be wearing them.

  • Of the 13 fatal traffic crashes, 5 (or 38%) occurred in urban areas, with the remaining 8 (or 62%) occurring in rural areas.
