The following is a synopsis of the fatality count during the 72-hour New Year holiday period, which began at 00:01 hours, Saturday, December 30th, 2006, and ended at midnight, Monday, January 1st, 2007.
The statistical information provided below represents preliminary figures and covers only those crashes investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol.
The preliminary traffic fatality total stands at 15.
- The 15 deaths occurred in 14 separate traffic crashes.
- 8 fatalities (or 53%) occurred during the hours of darkness.
- Three (or 21%) of the fatal traffic crashes were known to be alcohol-related; 6 (or 43%) remain listed as pending; with 5 (or 36%) presently classified as not alcohol related.
- Of the 15 deaths, 4 (or 27%) were pedestrians; and 1 (or 7%) was riding a moped.
- The rider of the moped was not known to be wearing a helmet.
- 56% of those killed in the 9 vehicles normally equipped with safety belts were not wearing their belts
