The following is a synopsis of the fatality experience during the Independence Day Holiday period which began at 12:01 a.m., Friday, July 4, 2003, and ended at midnight, Sunday, July 6, 2003.

During this time period, there were 25 people killed in 24 fatal traffic crashes.

5 (20%) of the people killed were under 21 years of age;
14 (56%) of the people killed were drivers;
6 (24%) of the people killed were passengers;
5 (20%) of the people killed were pedestrians;
0 (0%) of the people killed was a bicyclist;
6 (43%) of the 14 drivers and passengers killed in vehicles normally equipped with safety belts were not using their belts;
13 (52%) of the traffic deaths were alcohol-related;
12 (50%) of the fatal traffic crashes were alcohol-related;
14 (58%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred after dark;
18 (75%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred during clear weather;
20 (83%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred on straight and level highways; and
13 (54%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred on state roads.
