Major Ernesto Duarte
Florida Highway Patrol

For Release May 27, 2004:

TALLAHASSEE:  The Florida Highway Patrol has released enforcement totals from Operation Safe Ride, a 48-hour statewide enforcement operation conducted May 13-14, 2004. The campaign targeted aggressive and hazardous moving violations committed by operators of commercial motor vehicles. The commercial vehicle theme was chosen because of numerous complaints from the public concerning commercial vehicle traffic violations, as well as a number of significant crashes involving large trucks.

Enforcement totals from the two-day campaign include the following:
Aggressive drivers cited
DUI arrests
Improper passing
Lane change violations
Reckless driving charges
Following too closely
Speeding citations
Other arrests/citations
Commercial Motor Vehicles

During the two-day enforcement detail, troopers focused their efforts on every interstate, the Florida Turnpike, and other major state roads where commercial vehicle traffic is common. The Patrol is planning to deploy Operation Safe Ride throughout the rest of the year with a different selective enforcement theme scheduled each time, depending on specific enforcement needs.
