The following is a synopsis of the fatality experience during the Memorial Day Holiday period which began at 12:01 a.m., Friday, May 23rd, 2003, and ended at midnight, Monday, May 26th, 2003.

During this time period, there were 46 people killed in 41 fatal traffic crashes.

4 (9%) of the people killed were under 21 years of age;
34 (74%) of the people killed were drivers;
11 (24%) of the people killed were passengers;
1 (2%) of the people killed were pedestrians;
0 (0%) of the people killed was a bicyclist;
23 (68%) of the 34 drivers and passengers killed in vehicles normally equipped with safety belts were not using their belts;
24 (52%) of the traffic deaths were alcohol-related;
20 (49%) of the fatal traffic crashes were alcohol-related;
14 (34%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred after dark;
30 (73%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred during clear weather;
31 (76%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred on straight and level highways; and
21 (51%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred on state roads.
