The following is a synopsis of the fatality experience during the New Year Holiday period which began at 12:01 a.m., Tuesday, December 31st, 2002, and ended at midnight, Wednesday, January 1st, 2003.

During this time period, there were 20 people killed in 18 fatal traffic crashes.

6 (30%) of the people killed were under 21 years of age;
14 (70%) of the people killed were drivers;
5 (25%) of the people killed were passengers;
1 (5%) of the people killed were pedestrians;
0 (0%) of the people killed was a bicyclist;
10 (77%) of the 13 drivers and passengers killed in vehicles normally equipped with safety belts were not using their belts;
10 (50%) of the traffic deaths were alcohol-related;
10 (56%) of the fatal traffic crashes were alcohol-related;
12 (67%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred after dark;
7 (39%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred during clear weather;
10 (56%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred on straight and level highways; and
9 (50%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred on state roads.
