The following is a synopsis of the fatality experience during the Thanksgiving Holiday period which began at 12:01 a.m., Wednesday, November 27th, 2002, and ended at midnight, Sunday, December 1st, 2002.

During this time period, there were 49 people killed in 44 fatal traffic crashes.

8 (16%) of the people killed were under 21 years of age;
26 (53%) of the people killed were drivers;
10 (20%) of the people killed were passengers;
12 (24%) of the people killed were pedestrians;
1 (2%) of the people killed was a bicyclist;
16 (67%) of the 24 drivers and passengers killed in vehicles normally equipped with safety belts were not using their belts;
22 (45%) of the traffic deaths were alcohol-related;
19 (43%) of the fatal traffic crashes were alcohol-related;
35 (80%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred after dark;
37 (84%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred during clear weather;
34 (77%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred on straight and level highways; and
24 (55%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred on state roads.
