The following is a synopsis of the fatality experience during the Labor Day Holiday period which began at 12:01 a.m., Friday, August 30th, 2002, and ended at midnight, Monday, September 2nd, 2002.

During this time period, there were 42 people killed in 33 fatal traffic crashes.

12 (29%) of the people killed were under 21 years of age;
20 (48%) of the people killed were drivers;
14 (33%) of the people killed were passengers;
8 (19%) of the people killed were pedestrians;
0 (0%) of the people killed was a bicyclist;
20 (65%) of the 31 drivers and passengers killed in vehicles normally equipped with safety belts were not using their belts;
18 (43%) of the traffic deaths were alcohol-related;
15 (45%) of the fatal traffic crashes were alcohol-related;
21 (64%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred after dark;
13 (39%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred during clear weather;
26 (79%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred on straight and level highways; and
20 (61%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred on state roads.
