The following is a synopsis of the fatality experience during the Independence Day Holiday period which began at 12:01 a.m., Friday, July 2, 2004, and ended at midnight, Monday, July 5, 2004.

During this time period, there were 42 people killed in 35 fatal traffic crashes.

6 (14%) of the people killed were under 21 years of age;
28 (67%) of the people killed were drivers;
12 (29%) of the people killed were passengers;
2 (5%) of the people killed were pedestrians;
0 (0%) of the people killed was a bicyclist;
17 (57%) of the 30 drivers and passengers killed in vehicles normally equipped with safety belts were not using their belts;
14 (33%) of the traffic deaths were alcohol-related;
12 (34%) of the fatal traffic crashes were alcohol-related;
11 (31%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred after dark;
27 (77%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred during clear weather;
27 (77%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred on straight and level highways; and
28 (80%) of the fatal traffic crashes occurred on state roads.
