ZEPHYRHILLS - Florida Highway Patrol investigators are looking for help in identifying the driver and passenger of a pickup truck involved in a hit-and-run accident on State Road 52 and Giddens Road on Oct. 29 that claimed the life of the driver of the other vehicle. Robert John Schwefringhaus, 58, of 10440 Cranston Street, Spring Hill, died at Bayfront Medical Center on Friday night.
He had been hospitalized since the accident, which also injured his wife, Dorothy Schwefringhaus, 54. She was hospitalized at Bayfront Medical Center and has been released. Police describe the pickup truck as an older model Ford, possible 1980s, with rust on the right passenger door and bed. It was towing a trailer loaded with lumber.
Police said the driver is a white male, in his 50s, approximately 6 foot, and 230 pounds, with wavy black hair and a dark tan.
The passenger is a white male, about 20, approximately 6-foot-2, 190 pounds with light-colored hair and fair complexion.
Police say that at 10:45 a.m. on Oct. 29, the trailer became unhitched while crossing the railroad tracks at Giddens Road, west of U.S. 41. The trailer became airborne and struck a 1983 Oldsmobile driven by Schwefringhaus.
Prior to the crash, the pickup truck and its driver had been seen in the Zephyrhills area of Coats Road and Somers Court, police said.
