The Florida Highway Patrol reports motorists were a little safer on the road this Christmas than last year. Preliminary numbers show 10 people died on Florida roads from midnight Christmas eve through midnight on December 25th. That compares to 19 deaths on the roads last Christmas. Still, troopers report many of the deaths could have been avoided.
Lt. Col. Ken Howes with the Florida Highway Patrol "The majority of these crashes and the fatalities that have occurred were alcohol-related. We’re looking at as many as 78 percent possibly being alcohol-related. Once all the reports are in and another factor to consider is that of those people killed that had seat belts available to them, only 57 percent were buckled up, so alcohol and the lack of seat belt use played a big factor this holiday."
Three of the people killed on the roads this Christmas were pedestrians.
