MC Dangerous Roads

It's an unfortunate statistic. Marion County has the largest number of traffic fatalities among the surrounding counties. Eighty-three people have died this year. Florida Highway Patrol says it's because Marion County is geographically unique.

"Where Marion County becomes significant versus any other county in the state, we have five major roadways in this county," says Sgt. Succi.

These roadways are state road 200, highway 40, 301, 441, and I-75.

Seventy-five thousand motorists pass through the county every year, which also increases the number of deaths. In addition, Marion County has several major roads with multiple lanes, such as highway 27. FHP says people tend to drive faster on such roads.

Lastly, FHP says that the number of fatalities can be decreased if people wear their seat belt. Sgt. Succi emphasizes that wearing your seat belt will save your life
