The holiday travel season is "revving up" this weekend as people hit the roads. But, if you plan to travel, you'd better behave. Local law enforcement agencies are cracking down on speeders and aggressive drivers.
This week's crackdown is called "Operation ACE"--for "Aggressive Concentrated Enforcement." ACE provided some unexpected results and a hero who may have saved a little girl's life.
A four car wreck on northbound I-75 tied up traffic for several miles. It started when a car swerved to avoid Highway Patrol Trooper Bobby Duncan, who was trying to pull over a speeder driving without headlights. In the accident that followed a 12 year old girl was thrown from an SUV into the middle of the freeway. She was pulled to safety by Duncan and a passerby.
FHP spokesman Lt. Mike Burroughs added, "And not concerned about, not worried about what else happened, he (Duncan) knew the traffic was thick traveling northbound, he knew that once he'd seen the girl he had to remove her from the roadway and that's what he did, quickly."
The girl was taken the Shands/UF hospital and was treated and released. No one else was injured in the accident.
There are 30 extra units patrolling area roads throughout the holiday season.
