Man slams into FHP patrol car on Alley

A man was killed Thursday afternoon on Alligator Alley after he slammed into a Florida Highway Patrol car, authorities say.

The driver, whose name was not available from authorities late Thursday, was killed in the crash about a mile east of the Collier County toll plaza around 5 p.m., authorities say.

Trooper Maritza Martin, who suffered only minor injuries, was seated in her patrol car after completing a traffic stop at Mile Marker No. 99. A Pontiac Sunfire traveled off the interstate, spun out and slammed into the rear of the patrol car, troopers say.

Traffic headed west on Interstate 75 was slowed and at times diverted into the median while troopers were investigating the crash.
